BikePacking Through Latvia

Along the way, I found several Windmills that are not just architectural marvels; they are a testament to the ingenuity of the Latvian people. In times gone by, these structures played a pivotal role in the country’s agrarian economy.

The design of Latvian windmills is distinct, often characterized by their wooden construction and large, sweeping blades. These windmills were strategically placed in regions where the wind was strongest, ensuring maximum efficiency.

Over time, they became more than just functional structures; they evolved into community gathering spots, places where stories were shared, and bonds were forged.

Riding Through Riga

This time, I had a quick stop planned in Latvia’s capital, Riga.

Just enought time to catch one more rain shower this day when exploring the city center:

I used this oportunity to find some cover and try one of these delicious Latvian cakes:

Lilastes Pludmale: A Lakeside Retreat in Latvia

Nestled just a short ride away from the bustling city life of Riga, Lilastes Pludmale offers bikepackers a serene escape into Latvia’s natural splendor.

This region, with its pristine beach and the adjoining lake, is a testament to Latvia’s diverse landscapes, seamlessly blending the tranquility of freshwater with the vastness of the Baltic Sea.

Lilaste Lake, the heart of this region, is a freshwater haven. Surrounded by lush greenery, the lake’s calm waters mirror the sky, creating a picturesque setting for both relaxation and adventure.

You can can take a break from your journey to try other activities like fishing / Wake-Boarding or simply enjoy a lakeside picnic, listening to the gentle lapping of the water and the distant calls of local birdlife.

Truth is I discovered not long ago about WakeBoarding and now I see it ‘everywhere’

Adjacent to the lake you can explore Lilastes Pludmale, a stretch of sandy beach that kisses the Baltic Sea.

The gentle waves, combined with the cool sea breeze, make it an ideal spot for a refreshing dip after a long ride.

The beach, with its golden sands and dunes, offers panoramic views of the horizon, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sky paints a myriad of colors, reflecting on both the sea and the lake.

For those interested in local history, the area around Lilaste has its share of stories.

Ancient legends speak of the lake’s mystical properties, and the region has been a cherished spot for generations, with remnants of old fishing villages and traditional Latvian summer homes dotting the landscape.

Incorporating Lilastes Pludmale and its lake into your bikepacking route not only adds a touch of natural beauty but also provides a momentary respite, allowing you to connect deeply with Latvia’s rich landscapes and traditions.

Learnt during this Stage

That afternoon I met Jules.

He was a Belgium man who had been cycling for 6 months already.

He had crossed up North Norway, then towards the South through Findland, and now he was in direction towards Vilnius (opposite direction) and then way home.

He was a very interesting person, and we had a great chat together.

He was a very experienced cyclist, and he wanted to do such a trip during all his life.

Jules retired last year already and now he could make this dream come true.

‘I am not sure if I will be able to do this in 10 years, so it’s now or never’

Question: what is your dream? And what are you doing to make it come true? Will you wait for retirement? or do it now?
